Giovani giornalisti per l’ambiente: bubble tea, the taste of waste

What is Bubble tea?
Bubble tea is the name given to the wide variety of refreshing flavoured fruit teas and milk teas served ice cold or piping hot with chewy tapioca balls that you suck up through a big fat straw. Yum – It’s like a quirky snack and drink in one. The tapioca balls are sometimes referred to as “pearls” or “boba”, which some people say over time has evolved in to the world “Bubble” – isn’t it interesting how language can do that? However the true origins of the name  come from the small floating bubbles that are created by the vigorous shaking involved in making Bubble tea.
This new phenomenon spread rapidly to other Asian Countries before sneaking through the back door of the Chine towns all over North America (USA) and Australia.
What is the video of your students about?
Bubbleology is a lifestyle brand of bubble tea from UK which has recently become very popular among teenagers in Slovakia. Bubble tea attracts by bright colours and a tea-bar concepts. Its inseparable part, however, are plastic cups with a jumbo straw. They end up in landfills and produce mountains of waste.
Bubble tea is a modern way of drinking tea. Served hot or cold, sipped through a fat straw, bubble tea has become a worldwide phenomenon. Young people love this tea for its taste, jelly balls at the bottom, and attractive appearance. Let’s have a look at what people think about it – this is our video:  about plastic cups which are more and more. Plastic cups end up in waste dumps and incinerators. These cups cannot be recycled.
Since plastic cups are made of polypropylene, in Slovakia are not recyclable. Cups are recyclable only abroad and that’s very expensive.
